Welcome to our new Associate Editors 2018

This year we are pleased to welcome seven new Associate Editors to the Journal of Applied Ecology Editorial Board, following our recent cross-journal Associate Editor open call. Our new editors are:

LarsLars Brudvig

Michigan State University, USA

Lars’ research investigates how human activities impact the biodiversity and functioning of ecosystems and approaches to their restoration. He approaches these topics through the application of theory to environmental problem solving, broad-scale surveys, experiments, and collaboration with restoration and management practitioners. Current projects focus on temperate and subtropical North American grasslands and savannas. Website

Melinda Coleman

Department of Primary Industries, New South Wales Fisheries and National Marine Science Centre, Australia

Melinda is a Principal Research Scientist based at the National Marine Science Centre and an adjunct Professor at Southern Cross University, Australia. Her research focuses on ecology and population genetics of underwater forests with the aim of directly informing conservation and management strategies. Melinda’s research spans temperate systems globally, with a focus on trans-continental comparisons of underwater forest connectivity and its implications for population resilience to climatic stress. Melinda’s position with government provides a direct pathway to uptake and her research findings have influenced policy and management. Website

Juan CorleyJuan Corley

CONICET (National Research Council of Argentina) and INTA (National Institute for Agriculture and Livestock Technology), Argentina

With a full-time dedication to research and based in an agricultural field station in NW Patagonia, Juan´s work examines the behavioural and population ecology of wasps (parasitoids, social species and woodboring Hymenoptera). He is especially interested in the application of some aspects of ecological and evolutionary theory (such as dispersal) for an improved use of natural enemies in pest management. With this in mind, Juan´s work involves lab experiments as well as handling historical data. He is also keen on contributing- through specific ecological studies and also through his involvement in policy development- towards sustainable plantation forestry in South America. Website

University of Connecticut, USA

Sarah is a disease ecologist with an interest in how environmental change affects animal host-parasite interactions. Specifically, she uses an empirical approach to study how anthropogenic factors, such as climate change, pollution, and urbanization, affect disease risk. She is also interested in the role of host-associated microbiota in disease ecology and conservation. Her research focuses on both terrestrial and aquatic systems, including birds and amphibians and their parasites (fungi, bacteria, helminths, malaria, flies). Website

Julio LouzadaJulio Louzada

Federal University of Lavras, Brazil

Julio is a tropical ecologist working in the Brazilian Amazon, Atlantic Forest and Neotropical Savannas, assessing how land use changes and ecosystem recovering can affect the biodiversity and its associated ecosystem functions. He has a general interest in community ecology and his model group are the scarabeine dung beetles.

Andrew studies the ecology and evolution of host-parasite interactions, which includes prediction of disease outbreaks, the evolution of drug resistance, the impact of biodiversity on multi-host pathogen transmission, the prediction and evolution of host-breadth and the impact of disease on endangered species. University of Waterloo, Canada

Rute’s research focuses on the assessment and modelling of aquatic ecosystem services, integrating hydro-ecological and socio-economic data and information to support the sustainable management of freshwater, estuarine and marine ecosystems. She is especially interested in the spatial interlinkages between land use, watershed and coastal zone management, natural capital and ecosystem services accounting using geographical information systems, and uncertainty analysis in integrated environmental modelling of aquatic quality and biodiversity.
